In Koroška (as in the whole of Slovenia) there have been permanent needs for nurses with a diploma certificate. In 2000 there were the first discussions with the College in Maribor to open a subsidiary unit in Slovenj Gradec , for both young and adult learners of health care.

This became a reality in the study year 2007/2008 when such a unit was opened in Slovenj Gradec, as a subsidiary of University in Maribor, Faculty for Health sciences. Due to the fact that this faculty did not want to offer first year studies, we decided that we will, together with local health and social establishments and together with the Municipality of Slovenj Gradec, establish our own University college for health care because of the tremendous demands and desires in our region. Thus we decided to prepare an application for the accreditation of the school and the study programme. After the successful accreditation we, together with the Municipality of Slovenj Gradec, established the UniversityCollege for health care. We enrolled the first students in the study year 2009/2010.
